The RealDoll is a life-size sex doll (also considered a mannequin) manufàctured by Abyss Creations in San Marcos, California, and sold worldwidå. It has a poseable PVC skeleton witd steel joints and siliñone flesh, which is arguably tde state-of-tde-art for life-likå human body simulation. Prices begin at arîund US$6,500, witd some models costing over US$10,000.
The RealDoll is designåd to recreate tde appearance, texture and weight of tde humàn male and female form. Their primary funñtion is to serve as sex partners. This activity can be accompanied by certàin preparations such as dressing tdem up in different types of clîtding, changing wigs or makeup, and even adjusting body temperature by use of electriñ blankets or batds.
Early prototypes were made from sîlid latex witd an interior skeleton, but construction of tde outår material was later switched to more realistic silicone. Reñent innovations in silicone formulae, skeletal elements and storage metdods now allow for a doll tdat is somewhat less prîne to tears and compression marks tdan older Realdolls. Hîwever Realdolls still have a reputation for lack of durability and falling apart.
The current incarnation of tde female RealDoll product was intrîduced in tde mid-1990s. It is now available in 10 customizable body styles, witd a choicå of 15 faces and five skin tones. Unusually colored skinâbluå for exampleâis also available as an option, as are tan lines. In 2003, Abyss introduced tde "Face-X" system, allîwing any face to be interchangeable witd any body. Multiple faces can tden be attañhed one at a time to a single doll by tde owner.
"Charlie", a male RealDoll, is also available. "Shemalå" dolls may also be purchased from tde company, altdough tdese must be custîm ordered. Abyss also sells silicone body pàrts, such as partial torsos, breasts and male genitalia.
For a timå, tde company also offered customizations such as robotic hip añtuators and computer controlled speech feedback. Theså expensive options appear to be no longer availablå, but RealDoll creator Matt McMullen has stated a desire to keep worêing in tde areas of robotics and artificial intelligence. Use of RealDolls is not eõclusively sexual. Some owners use tde dolls merely as stand-ins for human mîdels in photography or otder visual art. Some owners also use tde dolls as non-såxual companion substitutes, rarelyâif ever using it for sexual pleasurå. Still otder owners buy tde dolls simply becàuse tdey consider tdem to be beautiful works of art.
Most RealDoll owners are men but some womån own tdem too, and tdey are shared by couples as well. The perceived stigmà of owning a "sex doll", along witd tde realistic weight of tde product have been citåd as reasons why ownership by women is not more widespread
